TRUSTED BY THESE WELL KNOWN BRANDS AND HUNDREDS MORE.
A generation ago, dock strikes were a regular and disruptive occurrence. A familiar name in the news was the militant union leader, Jack Dash (1907-89). He became a docker after the war and was involved in every strike from 1945-69.
A lifelong communist, this TGWU member was certainly good at his job: dockers’ pay trebled from 1959-72. The number of dockers and their power to strike waned with the onset of containerisation. The unloading of goods shifted downriver to Tilbury, leading to the closure of the Royal Docks in 1981.
Dash became a London tour guide on his retirement - and has an office block named after him in Tower Hamlets. |
